Gum disease is a type of infection which occurs on the tissues which hold the teeth in place. Gum disease usually occurs due to improper brushing and flossing habits which enable the growth and hardening of plaque on the teeth. At an advanced stage, periodontal disease can cause sore, gum bleeding and also tooth loss.

When should you opt for gum disease treatment?

Normal symptoms of gum disease include red or swollen gums, lingering bad breath, loose teeth, and receding gums. The dentist will examine your gums to look for symptoms related to inflammation using a small ruler called ‘probe’. He or she will also look for measure pockets which may exist around your teeth. Within a healthy mouth, the depth of such pockets is normally between 1 and 3 millimeters. The testing process for pocket depth is painless. The dentist may also ask questions related to your medical history to find out risk factors like diabetes which can cause gum disease.

What types of treatment do we offer?

At Rapha Dental Centre, we offer treatment for curing different types of gum diseases. Some of them are mentioned below-

Gingivitis- In case your gums are red, swollen and bleed easily, you may be suffering from gingivitis. Lack of oral hygiene is the major cause of gingivitis. During treatment, we will remove the plaque and tartar through a method known as scaling. In case there is a large tartar buildup, or your gums are highly sensitive, you may experience some discomfort.

Periodontitis- This is an advanced type of gum disease which can affect not only the area around your gum tissue but also beneath the gum line. It causes deterioration of your jaw bone, causing tooth loss and jawbone atrophy. We will first perform scaling and debridement to remove the plaque & calculus. Your gum line will also be cleaned.

Our team will use either hand tools or an ultrasonic device for breaking up the plaque and calculus. Then, we will perform root planing for smoothening the rough areas on your teeth’s roots. Based on the level of plaque and calculus presence, the entire process can take one or two visits.
